The motor yacht Mjølner is a sailing museum. Originally built in 1922, it operated for many years as a packet boat. Today, the vessel is certified as a passenger ship and can be hired for various purposes – sightseeing in the waters south of Fyn, or your own diving expedition.
The Mjølner was built as a 20 metric ton motorized yacht in 1922 by the renowned shipbuilder Ring Andersen in Svendborg, 20 meters long and 5 meters across. From the beginning, the vessel was used as a packet boat – i.e. a smaller boat used to transport the goods carried by big cargo ships from the larger ports to the smaller harbors. Depending on the distance, the packet boat would visit for instance the many small islands once or twice a week.
The Mjølner was originally used as a packet boat sailing between Svendborg and Langeland, from 1922 to 1929 sailing twice a day. Its main cargo: live pigs sent to the cooperating farmers’ butchers. Other forms of cargo, such as wood, coal, and bikes, as well as passengers, were also taken aboard.
Restoring the Mjølner
Eventually, the packet boats were replaced by cars and car ferries, and went out of business in the sixties. Today, the Mjølner operates in the waters of South Fyn as a living museum exhibiting its own history.
The Mjølner was donated to Langelands Museum by a private owner in 1990. At the time, the ship was worn down after many years of service and a general lack of up-keeping. When the restoration process began, it soon became clear that almost all the oak wood had to be replaced. Restoring the ship went on for 7 years. The engine was also renovated, and in 2004 the rigging was brought back to its original state.
The Mjølner Today
Today The Mjølner has the status of preservation-worthy and can be hired with a skipper by members of the public. It is used for diving expeditions as well as entertaining for private companies.
The interior has been preserved to a standard as near the original as possible. The old cargo space has 4 beds, a toilet, a sink and storage space.
The ship is also used for marine archaeological projects.
